Rt. 18: 2 Men Killed When Oil Tanker Overturns In Colts Neck

The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 on Rt. 18 north in Colts Neck. The men were ejected and the truck spilled oil on Rt. 18.

COLTS NECK, NJ — Two men were killed Saturday when an oil tanker overturned on Rt. 18 in Colts Neck, Colts Neck police announced.

The devastating accident happened at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 near mile marker 22 on Rt. 18 north. The tractor trailer carrying oil was headed north at the time and no other vehicles were involved. Both men were inside the cab of the truck and they were ejected onto Rt. 18 when it overturned. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Maurice Boatwright, 37, of Westfield, and the passenger Julio Escoto-Sandoval, 21, of Perth Amboy, were identified as the men killed.

When the tanker truck, belonging to KW Rastall, Inc., of North Brunswick, overturned, it caused the tank to separate from the vehicle, spilling approximately 1,400 gallons of diesel fuel oil into the shoulder of Rt. 18.

Monmouth County HazMat and NJ DEP responded to the scene to contain and later coordinate the clean-up.

Northbound traffic was detoured onto Rt. 34 from approximately 5:30 p.m. until midnight Saturday.

The crash is still under investigation and the Colts Neck Police are asking if anyone witnessed the crash, to contact Patrolman Morgan Savage at 732-780-7323.
