On Friday, October 11 at 8 p.m. Temple Rodeph Torah on Mohawk Drive in Marlboro will continue its innovative ways by hosting its first “Shabbat Under the Stars.” This outdoor service, which is free and open to the public, will be held on TRT’s front lawn around its brand new open fire-pit. This is sure to be an intimate and spiritual experience for all.
“The intense autumn night sky coupled with the warmth and energy from our new fire pit provides the perfect backdrop and mood for this alternative Friday night service,” said TRT’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Don Weber.

TRT’s “Shabbat Under the Stars” is the most recent example of TRT’s continued commitment towards providing alternative programming, which started with its widely acclaimed Rock Shabbat service two years ago. It also recently launched its unique Visual T’Filah program where two large screens on each side of the bima display liturgy and beautiful, thought-provoking images to enhance spirituality, and just held its first “Rock Hashanah” high holiday musical service. Additionally, TRT rolled out its inaugural “Sinful Texting” service on Yom Kippur where congregants used their smartphones to anonymously comment on themes of spirituality and Jewish life.

“The Shabbat Under The Stars service will have a ‘camp’ feel to it, which kids and adults alike will love,” said TRT’s Cantor Joanna Alexander. “Congregants will gather around the fire, pray and sing together, and have an opportunity to appreciate all that is good about life and our community. At TRT, we are committed to bringing our passion and joy about Judaism to our congregation and to the surrounding community, and that starts with making Shabbat special and meaningful for all,” said Cantor Alexander.
Congregants and guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs and cozy up to the campfire. In traditional campfire fashion, marshmallow roasting and s’mores making will take place immediately following the service. For additional information, please visit stars.trt.org or call 732-308-0055.
