Special Elections Disenfranchise Voters

The FRHSD BOE special election earlier this month on a nearly $40 million bond should have been on November 6th.

Election Day is almost upon us which has us asking “Why aren’t we having the Board of Education (BOE) referendum vote now?”

Special elections can cost taxpayers upwards of $200,000 per election. The consensus on why special elections are run is to sway the vote and/or drive down voter turnout.

Within the last month the Freehold Regional High School BOE tried to push through a bond referendum. In the last year the Marlboro BOE also tried to do the same. Both these referendums were addressing aging infrastructure needs. Most agree the Freehold Regional and Marlboro schools need repair, however, it shows a lack of fiscal responsibility to ask for school repair money while spending wastefully on special election costs. We need to raise our voices and not only say no to this underhanded behavior at the polls, but stop these special elections before they happen.

Instead of finding ways to disenfranchise voters, we should encourage more citizens to be part of the process. To that end, the Marlboro Township Republican Organization would like to help. Email marlborotownshipgop@gmail.com and tell us if you need a ride to your polling station. We will make every effort to get you there!
