Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

It’s that time again. The holidays are upon us, bringing joy, good times with family and friends, and an overabundance of delicious food. We know this can be difficult time to stay motivated and it can be easy for a few extra pounds to sneak up on us, but we have some tips to keep the holidays healthy.

Attending a party or holiday gathering?  The best tip to avoid overeating is to have a light snack beforehand. Coming to the door with a growling stomach almost always guarantees a plate piled with food. Nosh on a handful of nuts or an apple with peanut butter to regulate blood sugar and keep hunger pangs at bay. If you can bring your own healthy snacks or meal to the party, even better!

We all find ourselves constantly busy during the holidays, which often leads to making excuses when it comes to exercise. Make time to work out! Just 30 minutes of exercise per day can help you maintain a healthy weight and often leads to making smarter food choices. Even if you feel as thought you just can’t find the time, take the stairs instead of the elevator or park in the furthest spot away in the parking lot. These small adjustments in your daily routine can really add up!

How about that holiday happy hour? Alcohol contains lots of sugar and empty calories. A cocktail here and there won’t derail you, but keep yourself hydrated by drinking a glass of water between drinks. Not only will this help you drink in moderation and cut calories, but you’ll feel a lot better the next morning as well.

Lastly, don’t deprive yourself! Just remember the phrase “everything in moderation.” Quick weight loss methods don’t provide lasting results and relying on diet aids, such as drinks and pills, will only hurt your body in the long run. This holiday, focus on nutritional balance and pay attention to the foods and drinks you consume. Thinking about a weight loss program to stay on track during the holidays? Be sure to ask these question first. No matter what you do, focus on your goals and commit to having a healthy holiday season!
