Tornado Watch Issued; Marlboro Residents Urged To Prepare For Severe Storms
Flash flooding, strong winds and more are expected throughout New Jersey starting on Monday afternoon.
MARLBORO, NJ — Marlboro Township officials are urging residents to take precautions ahead of severe storms set to move into New Jersey on Monday afternoon.
In a letter to residents, Mayor Jonathan Hornik said that the National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch until 7 p.m. on Monday, alongside a Wind Advisory from 2 p.m. on Monday until 2 a.m. on Tuesday.
A “Tornado Watch” means weather conditions exist that are favorable to producing tornadoes, the National Weather Service said.

Though there is a potential for tornadoes throughout the Garden State, officials said the risk to Monmouth County is seen as slight, with the primary hazard expected to be damaging winds.
“The threat for more widespread, significant severe weather will be mainly in the evening," according to the National Weather Service.

In his letter, Hornik said wet grounds, coupled with high winds, could lead to power outages and tree damage.
Township officials are urging residents to take time to prepare with the following steps:
- Review NJ OEM tornado preparedness and know your home’s safe location.
- Ensure all cell phones, backup batteries, tablets, etc. are fully charged.
- Tie down or bring inside all lawn decorations, as they can become projectiles in high winds.
- JCP&L: Report outages to 888-LIGHTSS or report online here
- Report downed wires to Marlboro Police. Stay clear of electrical lines, which may be live and dangerous.
- Preparedness information and important websites can be found on the Marlboro Office of Emergency Management here.
- Do not drive or walk through flooded waters.
“We will continue to monitor the weather forecast and keep you updated as needed via email, social media channels and/or the township website; however, emergent alerts will be sent via NWS and WEA alerts as noted above,” Hornik said. “Stay safe.”
