The Truth about the County Board of Commissioners' attempted seizure of the Monmouth Executive Airport

In late 2023, the Republican controlled Monmouth County Board of Commissioners, led by Director Thomas Arnone, began exploring the acquisition of the 746 acre Monmouth Executive Airport through eminent domain. Officials cited safety concerns and a desire to ensure the airport remained a functional regional asset. They argued the facility had "languished" and needed public oversight to reach its potential. Alan Antaki, who bought the airport in 2013 and invested millions in improvements, viewed the move as a hostile government overreach. He alleged the county’s inspections were a "pretext" for a seizure. A major point of contention for many residents was the timing. The county’s interest coincided with the massive Netflix film studio project at nearby Fort Monmouth. Critics and Antaki’s legal team suggested the county wanted to seize the airport to serve Hollywood executives, essentially using public power for private corporate convenience.

The legal and political battle effectively ended in March 2025, when both parties reached a settlement. In exchange, Antaki granted the county a "right of first refusal" (meaning if he ever sells, the county gets the first chance to buy it) and agreed to collaborate on community programs, such as aviation training partnerships with Brookdale Community College.

The attempted seizure of the private airport by the Republican controlled Monmouth County board of commissioners was fiscally irresponsible, as the county spent hundreds of thousands on consultants and legal fees for a seizure that ultimately didn't happen. The move was also done without the consultation of the people, as the initial resolution was passed right after the 2023 elections in Monmouth County.

The attempted seizure of the Monmouth Executive Airport, was not only fiscally irresponsible, as the county spent nearly 1 million in taxpayer money on the failed initiative, but it was also a violation of the county's duty to defend property rights, and reducing government waste, as the Monmouth County Republican led government attempted to abuse their power to take private land for economic development, while wasting crucial government resources to do so.

Monmouth County deserves better than this, and that starts by electing new leadership that's actually accountable to the people, and aware of their duties to protect the property of said people, without government overreach, and a lack of oversight.
