PERTH AMBOY, NJ — An 11-year-old boy stabbed another 11-year-old boy Wednesday afternoon in Perth Amboy, according to the office of Perth Amboy Mayor Helmin Caba.

The 11-year-old boy who was stabbed remains hospitalized at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick as of Friday morning, according to a spokeswoman for the mayor. The boy had surgery and is now in stable condition.

The two boys had gotten into a dispute earlier that day, and after dismissal the older boy, who is in sixth grade, followed the fifth grader home from Samuel E. Shull Middle School and stabbed him with a household knife.

This happened at 2:37 p.m., shortly after dismissal on Johnstone Street between Sutton and Ridgeley streets.

The older boy accused of doing the stabbing was taken into Perth Amboy Police custody Wednesday night after an investigation by the City of Perth Amboy Police Special Victims Bureau. He was charged with juvenile delinquency, said the mayor's office. Had he been an adult, the charges would include attempted murder and aggravated assault, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Ciccone.
