4 Firefighters Injured In Matawan Fire Monday Afternoon

Breaking: A three-alarm fire occurred at a home on Nawatam Way​ at 3:20 p.m. Monday.

MATAWAN, NJ — A three-alarm fire broke out on Nawatam Way in Matawan Monday afternoon, and four local firefighters were injured fighting the blaze. Many in the Matawan area and up and down Rt. 34 reported seeing the smoke Monday afternoon.

The fire occurred at around 3:20 p.m. in a private home, which was unoccupied at the time. Firefighters suffered burns, smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, Matawan Mayor Joseph Altomonte told the APP. One firefighter burned his hand, the other burned his arm and the other two suffered smoke inhalation. All four had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The home where the fire started was badly damaged, Mayor Altomonte said, and a nearby home also suffered smoke damage.
