The financial advisor admitted he stole from churches in Matawan and Keyport, a published report said.

A judge sentenced an 80-year-old man to three years in prison last week after he admitted he stole from churches in Matawan and Keyport, a published report said.

Richard Menninger, a financial advisor, had pleaded guilty to theft charges in state Superior Court, Freehold, a report on NJ.com said.

He had been indicted for taking more than $500 from the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Matawan and more than $75,000 from the Gethsmane Lutheran Church in Keyport, the report said.

In court, his defense attorney said her client felt awful and had been duped into believing he won a Costa Rican lottery, according to NJ.com.
