Aberdeen Police Charge Man With Shoplifting

Police in Middletown and Aberdeen posted photos on their Facebook pages, asking for the public's help identifying the man.

A Hazlet man has been charged with shoplifting in Middletown and Aberdeen.

Mark Vargas, 46, of 8th Street, was arrested on Sept. 10 by Middletown Detective Laurence Schachtel.

Middletown police had used their Facebook page to ask the public for help identifying Vargas, and they posted a photo of him, pushing a shopping cart that contained packages of diapers.

Aberdeen police made a similar request on their Facebook page, posting photos of him. In that post, police said he left with a large amount of food.

He was charged in Aberdeen on Sept. 9. Police Chief John Powers said he shoplifted on Sept. 3 at the Stop & Shop on Route 34.

Middletown police said he turned himself into their department last week.

“We’d like to thank everyone for any assistance provided in this case,” police said on Facebook.
