Aberdeen Provides List of Prohibited Recycling Items
Aberdeen Township would like to remind residents that certain items should not be placed in their recycling bins.

In the wake of recent news reports noting how China, the world’s largest market for recycled materials, has been rejecting shipments from U.S. recycling plants due to unwanted content, Aberdeen Township would like to remind residents that certain items should not be placed in their recycling bins.
Recycling must not contain the following: plastic bags, margarine tubs, diaper wipes containers, yogurt cups, clear salad containers, food storage containers, bottle caps or lids, ceramics, dishes, glassware, lightbulbs, windows, aluminum foil, trays or cookware, plates and any food boxes (such as pizza) that have been directly touched by food.
“Shipments can be rejected by the recycling plant if these items are found,” explained Aberdeen Recycling Coordinator Catherine Morello. “Because recyclables are considered commodities, municipalities receive money back for each type of recyclable they send to the plant. If the shipment is rejected, the town receives less money, hurting our taxpayers.”

Residents should also remember that only plastics marked #1 and #2 on the bottom with a pourable neck smaller than the body can be recycled. Examples would include plastic milk containers or laundry detergent containers. All plastic, glass and metal containers must be clean and free of any food content.
Ms. Morello also advised residents to be sure to cover their recycling pails to prevent rain or snow from contaminating the contents.
