Keyport Fire Chief Dies On Duty After Car Crash

The chief of the Keyport Fire Department died over the weekend. His death is being considered an active-duty death, said the fire dept.

KEYPORT, NJ — The chief of the Keyport Fire Department died over the weekend.

His death is being considered an active-duty death, maintains the Keyport Fire Department.

Timothy Pfleger got into a car accident as he drove back from a local fire academy in July, reported NJ.com. The 32-year-old Pfleger has been injured since.

He died Saturday, according to NJ.com.

The Keyport Fire Department is all volunteer.

"Chief Pfleger was an amazing firefighter, outstanding chief and above all a genuine loving friend. Anyone who had the honor of meeting him knows that his friendship will always be missed," Keyport Fire Patrol posted on Facebook. "Tim was a true leader to the members of Keyport Fire Patrol and was always there to help with anything he could."

A visitation wake will be held this Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. at Holmdel Funeral Home and a firefighter’s memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. that same day. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s United Methodist Church on Florence Avenue in Hazlet.

His family has asked that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his name to the Keyport Fire Department.
