MATAWAN, NJ — On April 9, students at Lloyd Road Elementary School gathered outside on the grounds of the school to form this creation, photographed from above by a drone.

"Students once again participated in a collaborative art experience celebrating unity, creativity and community," said Tara Gurney, an art teacher at Lloyd Road School and who organized the event.

This was sponsored by the school's PTO this year (last time it was grant-funded). Oregon-based artist Daniel Dancer also came back to work with the students to create the project.

Gurney said the students formed the butterfly in honor of America's 250th birthday this year. In years past, students at the school formed a Husky, which is the mascot of the Aberdeen school district: Lloyd Road School 4th, 5th Graders Form Shape Of A Husky On School Grounds (2024)

"This year, in honor of America’s 250th birthday, students came together to make a butterfly on our school's lawn. Our butterfly represented freedom, hope, and the unique contributions of every student coming together as one larger work of art."
