The boy was identified as a seventh grader at Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School. He was hit by a moving truck at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Broad Street and Rt. 34 in Matawan.

Matawan Police say the boy was riding a BMX-style bicycle when he was hit by a 2019 Hino moving truck, which was headed east on Broad Street. The truck was driving through the Rt. 34 intersection when it hit the child.

The boy had to be airlifted to a trauma center, according to the GoFundMe.

"He suffered significant injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center, where he spent time on a ventilator," they wrote. "While (he) has made encouraging progress and is now off the ventilator, he remains in critical condition and faces a long road to recovery."

The boy was listed in critical but stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, said police.

His mother has been by his bedside the entire time.

The Matawan-Aberdeen school district said they have counselors and case managers at all the schools in the district for students to talk to, and the district said they are "deeply concerned about the well-being of students and staff" as the school district and town reels from what happened.

The driver of the moving truck remained at the scene. No charges or summonses have been issued at this time.

Anyone with information on the incident, or who witnessed it, is asked to contact Matawan Police Detective Sergeant Charles Henry at 732-290-2020, ext. 2609 or Monmouth County Prosecutor's Detective Brian Boryszewski at 732-431-7160, ext. 4082.
