PERTH AMBOY, NJ — A 17-year-old and his grandfather remain in critical condition Tuesday in the burn unit at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, after they narrowly escaped Friday's Perth Amboy fire that killed an 11-year-old boy.

The boy who died is the younger brother of the 17-year-old; the man is grandfather to both boys.

The fire broke out at 2:45 a.m. last Friday, June 5, at a home on Chauncey Street. A total of six families lived in the house, which had been broken up into different apartments.

The 11-year-old boy died in a second-story apartment, according to TapInto.

A total of 26 people were evacuated from the fire. The grandfather and his two grandsons were the most severely injured; the younger boy died at the scene and his older brother and grandfather were rushed by helicopter to Cooperman Barnabas. They are severely burned.

It is still unclear how the boy, 11, died. The city of Perth Amboy is still not saying what the cause of the fire was.
