2 People Jump To Escape Burning Boat In Sayreville

SAYREVILLE, NJ — Sayreville Police and firefighters saved two people who jumped from their motorboat Thursday morning after it caught fire.

For reasons that are unknown, the boat's engine caught fire at around 11 a.m., while the boat was in the Washington Canal.

The two people aboard said they tried to put out the fire themselves, unsuccessfully. And then, unable to find their life jackets, they jumped into the water to escape.

First responders located the two people standing on the marsh shoreline behind Weber Avenue. One of them had received a minor burn, but that was the only injury.

Sayreville Police have video of the boat on fire.
