Boy Scout Troop 66 Cake Auction & Pot Luck Dinner

Boy Scout Troop 66 holds annual Cake Auction & Pot Luck Dinner

On Wednesday April 20, Boy Scout Troop 66 held its annual Cake Auction & Potluck Dinner to raise funds for the upcoming scout year. Each scout is asked to make a cake, cupcakes, or other baked good while each family brings a hot or cold dish to share. After opening ceremonies and announcements the families eat from the array of delicious dishes and then the real fun starts. Each boy describes his cake, and explains how he made it as he walks around the cafeteria showcasing his creation. The families present then start bidding on the cake, usually in $5 or $10 increments. This event is very popular and the Troop 66 families look forward to it each year as the scouts outdo themselves with their amazing cakes. Some scouts keep it simple with a strawberry cheesecake or a chocolate layer cake, while others let their imaginations run wild. This year’s hottest cakes were made out of a variety of edible items including twinkies, rice crispies, sandwich cookies, and many assorted candies.

One of the scouts who’s currently finishing up his Eagle project decided to incorporate his project into his cake using 9 different flavors of cake. His “Burrowes Mansion’s Gate Keeper’s House” was the biggest cake of the night and raised the most funds. Other notable creations included a cheeseburger cake, a rubik’s cube cake, a log cabin cake plus an assortment of patriotic and scout themed cakes. The monies raised from the Cake Auction, which is the Troop’s only fundraiser, will fund the Troop for the 2016-2017 year including camping equipment like tents, tarps, and stoves. As well as training opportunities for the scouts, awards, advancement, and camping fees.

Troop 66 was founded in 1957 in Matawan, NJ and provides an active year round outdoor program for boys in 5th grade and above. Scoutmaster Bob Shea has lead the Troop for over 30 years and, along with his Assistant Scoutmasters, reinforces the ideals put forth in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Troop 66 gives back to the local community by conducting food drives, participating in civic events, volunteering at municipal events and completing Eagle projects to assist local organizations and clubs.
