Top 10 Makeup Mistakes you can avoid

Everyone always asks me what they are doing wrong when it comes to their makeup. After 20+ years of experience I have seen the same mistakes over and over. Here is a list of what NOT to do.

  1. Using the wrong foundation- Your foundation should match your neck. You do not give yourself a tan look or try to add color with your foundation. Foundation is meant to even out your skin tone - period. Use a moisturizing formula to keep skin looking dewier and younger.
  2. Using black eyeliner- Unless you have Kim Kardashian's coloring, black eyeliner for everyday use is harsh. Try a color liner (not brown) to give your face a little lift. Try a smokey green or navy for brown or green eyes and a gray-blue for blue eyes. Still not sure? Come in for a makeup lesson and let me show you what colors will bring out your coloring best.
  3. Using eyeshadow as a primer- Eyeshadow can't stick to skin. When you put powder shadow on your eyes it may show up temporarily but by midday it will look worn off and you will look tired. Try using a shadow base to keep your shadow long lasting, prevent creases and make the shadows show up their true color.
  4. Not filling in and shaping your eyebrows- The single BEST thing you can do for your face is fill in and shape your brows. Your brows can lift your face and take years off your appearance.
  5. Putting blush on the apples of your cheeks- Try this: smile at yourself in a mirror so you see the apples of your cheeks. Then watch what happens to them when you stop smiling. They drop down and so will your blush if you put it on the apples of your cheeks. Instead, put it on top of bronzer up on your cheekbones.  Blush gives you a pop of color and bronzer gives you warmth...which brings me to number 6.
  6. Not using bronzer- While your foundation should match your neck you still want some warmth in your face. Bronzer strategically placed around your face, not all over it which will just make you look orange and over made up, will give your face warmth.  Place bronzer on and just below your cheekbone then blush just on the cheekbone and your face will glow!
  7. Wearing peachy blush and pink lipstick- Always match your lipstick to your blush - then you look like your makeup was coordinated and your look is polished.
  8. Not staying current.  Dark liner and light lipstick date you and make you look older. Try to update your look every 6 months or so. You will look younger if you keep with the times.
  9. Not replacing your mascara every 3 months- Old mascara looks clumpy, dry and your lashes never look their best. Plus, old mascara is a prime breeding ground for bacteria. It needs to be replaced at least every 3 months.
  10. Wearing the wrong colors- No matter how talented you are at applying makeup, the wrong colors will never look right. They will fight your looks rather than enhance them.  A lesson teaching you the right colors will keep you looking pretty and polished!
