Brookdale Community College Suspends Student

Officials at Brookdale Community College in Middletown have suspended a student who is accused of posting offensive tweets about Curt Schilling’s daughter, according to published reports.

Last week, Schilling posted a tweet, congratulating his daughter on her acceptance into Salve Regina University in Rhode Island.

On his blog, the former Red Sox player wrote that he expected to see congratulatory tweets, and was not surprised to see others with messages like “Can’t wait to date her.”

But, then he wrote, “tweets with the word rape, bloody underwear and pretty much every other vulgar and defiling word you could likely fathom began to follow.”

He focused on tweets he said were posted by two men with ties to New Jersey: Sean MacDonald, a Montclair State University graduate, and Adam Nagel, a student at Brookdale Community College, according to NJ.com.

The newspaper said the social media accounts of both men have been deactivated.

On his blog, Schilling wrote:

“I was a jock my whole life. I played sports my whole life. Baseball since I was 5 until I retired at 41. I know clubhouses. I lived in a dorm. I get it. Guys will be guys. Guys will say dumb crap, often. But I can’t ever remember, drunk, in a clubhouse, with best friends, with anyone, ever speaking like this to someone…”

Nagel, who enrolled at Brookdale in 2013, was a member of the school’s student radio club, and has been suspended, according NJ.com and the NY Post.

On its Facebook page, Brookdale issued a statement:

“The Twitter comments posted by this student are unacceptable and clearly violate the standards of conduct that are expected of all Brookdale students. The student has been summarily suspended and will be scheduled for a conduct hearing where further disciplinary action will be taken. The Brookdale Police are actively investigating this matter. Brookdale takes this behavior very seriously and does not tolerate any form of harassment. Our sincerest apologies to Gabby Schilling. Her achievement should be celebrated and not clouded by offensive comments.”
