Drunk Holmdel Man Hits Matawan School Van, Police Charge

A 7-year-old child and two adults were injured in the hit-and-run accident on Highway 35, police say.

Aberdeen, NJ - A 7-year-old child and two adults were injured after a Holmdel man, allegedly driving drunk and with heroin on him, drove into a school van on Highway 35 late last month, according to Aberdeen police.

The van driver and an aide complained of neck and back pain. The child was seven and had a leg injury, but was not taken to the hospital as per a parent’s request, Aberdeen police told Patch. The van was registered to the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District.

Anthony Carbone, 24, of Bethany Road in Holmdel was arrested on Nov. 25, according to Aberdeen Chief of Police John Powers. On that day, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Carbone was driving a 2003 Ford F-450 truck south on Hwy. 35 near Amboy Ave., when he struck a school van that was stopped at a traffic signal.

Carbone fled the scene, police said, but he was stopped by Hazlet Township police a short time later on Bethany Rd. near Holmdel Rd., and taken into custody. He was found to be in possession of suspected heroin, police said.

Carbone was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash, failure to report a crash, and assault by auto.
