Thursday, October 3 @ 11 am – Learn Tai Chi
Come and participate in this meditative form of exercise which is associated with both spiritual and health benefits. This monthly class will be taught by Al Chuderski. No prior experience is needed, just wear comfortable clothing.
Participants must be at least 18 years-old and preference will be given to Matawan Aberdeen card holders.

Friday, October 4 @ 2 pm – First Friday Film & Discussion –Dyeing & Weaving at La Grana Tejidos
In this new program series, watch a short documentary (via Kanopy) with our Head of Adult Services, Jill Stafford, and then stick around for the discussion. Feel free to bring a sandwich or snack to eat while watching the film.

Heritage preservation is an increasingly urgent priority as new generations of indigenous peoples choose modern Western lifestyles, leaving the old ways of doing things behind. In the village of Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico, Benito Hernandez and his wife, Rosario, have chosen to live a very traditional life, and to continue to produce beautiful rung and hangings using the techniques that have been passed down in their families for generations.

An overview of the key plans and documents people need to have in place to ensure their health care wishes are carried out, their financial interests are protected and they can receive quality care as they age. Discussion covers topics such as: Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Advanced Health Directives, Medicaid and more. Presented by Garland Law Offices.
Thursday, October 10 @ 1:30 pm – Chair Yoga
Interested in learning yoga, but have difficulty getting down on the floor? Now you too can enjoy all the benefits of yoga without having to get on a mat. You will learn many yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation and relaxation while seated in a chair. The class will be taught by Danielle Meany, RYT. All levels welcome. No experience or equipment is necessary.

Saturday, October 12 @ 2 pm – Knit/Crochet for a Cause
Do you like to knit or crochet? Come join us to make Twiddle Muffs for Alzheimer’s patients.
They are easy to make and bring joy to people in need. Just bring your own crochet hooks or knitting needles and some leftover yarn. We will provide directions for the project. You will meet people who share your interests and doing something good for the community. We will meet once a month to complete the items and prepare them for distribution.

Wednesday, October 16 @ 7 pm – The Procraftinators
The Procraftinators, a crafting meet-up for adults, is the perfect place to bring whatever unfinished object (UFO), craft project or hobby you are working on. Complete that knitting, hand-sewing, embroidery, felting, drawing or jewelry project while socializing with others for encouragement and inspiration.
Thursday, October 17 @ 7 pm – Roadmap to the Stars: The Night Sky Explained
When you wish upon a star, wouldn’t it be good to know which star it is and what constellation it lies in? Objects in the night sky can be pinpointed with a little understanding of the celestial sphere and its coordinates. Hands-on activities using star charts will serve to bring the point home. Following the indoor presentation, the program will continue outdoors to view celestial objects in the night sky through a powerful hand-crafted telescope (weather permitting).

Friday, October 18 @ 7 pm – Raconteur Radio: “The War of the Worlds”
Metuchen-based Raconteur Radio presents a staged radio play of “The War of the Worlds,” loosely adapted from the H.G. Wells classic. The 55-minute production features theatrical lighting, period costumes, Golden Age radio equipment, sound effects and vintage commercials.
Monday, October 21 @ 7 pm – Alice’s Ordinary People: Documentary screening and discussion with filmmaker Craig Dudnick
Meet Alice Tregay - an unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement in Chicago whose remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. King to the election of Barack Obama. Alice was a woman who refused to stand still for injustice and brought others together to effect change. Filmmaker Craig Dudnick introduces the situation in Chicago that led Alice to join the movement and tells how he came to make the film.
Wednesday, October 23 @ 11 am – Breast Cancer Awareness
NJ CEED (Cancer Education Early Detection) will be at Matawan- Aberdeen Public Library for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They will present on the importance of women’s health in relation to breast cancer. There will be FREE giveaways, and a gift card will be raffled.
Wednesday, October 23 @ 7 pm - Halloween: A Haunted History
Have you ever wondered why at Halloween we carve pumpkins, dress up in costumes, or decorate our homes with skeletons and ghosts?
This colorful program traces the strange history of Halloween, from Old World harvest festivals to our modern family holidays. Along the way, learn about the origins of the jack-o’-lantern, Orson Welles’ 1938 “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast, the first monster movies, haunted lighthouses and hotels, and much more.
Thursday, October 24 @ 7 pm – Meditation for Everyone
Learn the power that your mind has over your body and bring peace through a mind-body connection. Understand the science behind meditation and relax through guided sessions. Each class will also focus on healthy and practical habits including breathing exercises, techniques to quiet distractions, and creating a routine and space.
Monday, October 28 @ 7 pm – Yoga Basics
This class is great for the beginner or experienced student as we give variations for all levels. Focusing on movement integrating breath, awareness, and alignment you will build strength, focus, flexibility, and balance for both mind and body. The class will be taught by yoga instructor, Carrie Palamara. Please bring your own yoga mat or large towel as well as a bottle of water.
Must be at least 18 years-old to participate.
