Haunted History Of Matawan Walking Tours Return This Year

These tours will run for four time slots one night only, Oct. 29, and are a great activity for people alone or groups.

MATAWAN, NJ — After they were suspended for the past two years due to the pandemic, the Matawan Historical Society has resumed its haunted walking tours of Matawan.

These tours will run for one night only, Oct. 29, and are a great activity for people alone, groups or families. These are historical walking tours of the borough of Matawan and will local residents are your guides. Matawan is rich in history, as it was used in the 1600 and 1700s as a place where pirates hid treasure (along with Sandy Hook peninsula); Matawan was a bloody fighting ground in the American Revolution and then again during Prohibition, Matawan's back bays and marshy channels were again used as the ideal hiding spots by liquor bootleggers. Matawan has many fine old homes and mansions, several of which are said to be haunted.

We've done the tours and they are spooky; they are not appropriate for small children who scare easily.

Also this year, for the first time ever, the Monmouth County Historical Association will offer their first annual Historic Ghost Tours at the Allen House in Shrewsbury.

"Ghostly guides will regale visitors with stories about the Revolutionary War massacre, the woman in the rocking chair, gruesome Victorian medical practices, and more! And if that's not enough, we'll have a mini exhibition featuring some of the strange, eerie and chilling objects from the collection. Included will be this iron hook, made by Freehold blacksmith John Hall for the execution of James P. Donnelly in 1857."
