Is socializing my dog important?

Have you had a bad experience at the dog park?  Do your work hours make it hard for you to arrange 'play dates' for your dog?  Does it matter that your dog doesn't socialize with other dogs?

In general, dogs are social animals.  Certain breeds have more tendencies towards a pack mentality than others but most like to socialize.

Minimally, learning the correct way to approach another dog (doggy etiquette) is important, as you want to be able to walk with and travel with your dog without worrying about encountering another dog. This is really a safety issue.

Additionally, we cannot offer the same kind of play that a dog gets from other dogs - romping, tumbling, chasing for an extended amount of time.  The opportunity to 'just be a dog' is great exercise and allows your pet to burn off energy.  Even calmer or older dogs benefit from the mental stimulation of watching others play and interacting in a less active way.

If dog parks frighten you, look for a convenient and reputable dog daycare facility.  Most require proof of vaccination and evaluate the dogs before they admit them for play.  Ask about the training the staff receives and whether there is always a staff member with the dogs when they are loose.  Go for a tour of the facility to make sure it's clean and a place you would want to leave your pet.

At the end of the day, you pick up a tired, happy dog and you can both spend the evening relaxing!
