Joseph W. Schauer III, MD, Presented with the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians' Chair Award

The New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP) recently presented Joseph W. Schauer III, MD, with the Chair Award at the NJAFP’s Annual Scientific Assembly in Atlantic City.

The NJAFP, the largest primary care medical specialty society in the state, is a leader in health care reform, advancing the cause of the family physician and drafting legislation that improves the health care system statewide.

The Chair Award is one of the most important awards presented each year. It is presented to a person who has dedicated a lifetime of service to both the Academy and the specialty of family medicine. NJAFP honored Dr. Schauer with the Chair Award for his unrelenting service and ongoing support of family medicine.

Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Schauer entered the practice by following in the footsteps of his father, Joseph Schauer, Jr., MD, and his uncle, Edward A. Schauer, MD and joining them at Schauer Family Medical Group in Farmingdale. Currently, he is president of Farmingdale Family Practice Associates, a level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home. Together with Sheila Mellody, MD, and Heather Zeveney, APN, the practice utilizes a “team-based” approach to provide high-quality, cost-effective care highlighted by enhanced care coordination, improved access, patient engagement, preventive health and disease management.

An active member of NJAFP since 1987, Dr. Schauer previously served the organization in a number of capacities, including president and chairman of the Board of Trustees. Additionally, he served as chairman for the Patient-Centered Medical Home Primary Care Initiative, during which NJAFP worked with senior management of a major health care insurer to design, develop and implement primary care initiatives based on patient-centered care in New Jersey.

Dr. Schauer is currently a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a member of the Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative NJ Multi-Stakeholder Committee and Jersey Shore University Medical Center Peer Review Committee and for five years, served as a member and director of Emergency Children’s Help Organization, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to children and families during times of need.

Dr. Schauer earned a bachelor of science in biology from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania and a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He finished his family medicine residency at Mountainside Family Practice Associates in Verona prior to joining his father and uncle. He resides in Colts Neck with his wife, Alanna.
