League of Women Voters of New Jersey Response Regarding Voter Registration Error at Motor Vehicle Commission

The League of Women Voters of New Jersey takes the integrity and security of our elections seriously. We appreciate Governor Sherrill's transparency in acknowledging the vendor software error that occurred between 2023 and 2024, which resulted in some individuals being mistakenly added to New Jersey’s voter rolls.

While this mistake should not have happened, we commend New Jersey officials for publicly identifying the issue, correcting the error, sharing specific details about the scope of the problem, and taking steps to remove the affected registrations. The Sherrill administration is acting responsibly to correct the mistake and ensure that it does not happen again. The League of Women Voters will continue to monitor the situation as it remains under investigation to ensure that voting rights are protected.

The improperly registered individuals were added to the voter rolls because of a software error and bear no responsibility for this mistake. We are encouraged that those affected will receive notifications. As the state continues its review, these individuals should also be provided with clear guidance and resources to ensure that they do not face punitive consequences for an error that was entirely beyond their control. Non-citizen voting remains rare in our country.

Public confidence in our elections depends on transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership. Election discussions must be rooted in verified facts, and not disinformation and conspiracy theories.
