Support for Families at Bayshore Family Success Center

The Bayshore Family Success Center welcomed local families and community organizations to its new home at the Union Beach Memorial Library last week. Representatives from The Community YMCA and other local nonprofits, state and country health officials, community leaders, and residents of the area learned about the many programs now available to the Bayshore community at the center's first Open House.

The Community YMCA's President & CEO Rhonda Anderson said the Y is honored to have been selected by the New Jersey Department of Children and Families for funding that enables the Bayshore Family Success Center to provide much needed support to families in Union Beach and the Bayshore area. The center is a member of the Family Success Center Statewide Network.

The center focuses on giving families a place to come together and develop supportive networks. In addition, the Bayshore Family Success Center staff hopes to help enrich the lives of families in the area by linking local residents to resources in areas such as family empowerment, life skills training, and advocacy, in Union Beach, Atlantic Highlands, Belford, Highlands, Keansburg, Keyport and Leonardo.

Center Director Darcy Dobens announced that the first information session for parents and children is Wednesday, August 14 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the center. The session will be presented by Y team member, Ellen Bloom-Rau, MSW, LSW, and will include information for parents on helping their children cope with life after Superstorm Sandy. Children will have a chance to view a special episode of Sesame Street, aimed to help kids recover from an environmental crisis.

A main goal of the state-funded center is to create a Parent/Community Advisory Board made up of parents from the Bayshore area. The committee will help the center in targeting issues facing the community and planning ways to face these challenges. Anyone interested in volunteering on the Parent/ Advisory Board, can contact the center at 732.497.3811.

The center, located at the Union Beach Memorial Library, is open and ready to help Bayshore residents six days a week. The Family Success Center’s hours of operation are Monday 9-5, Tuesday 9-7, Wednesday 12-5, Thursday 9-7, Friday 9-5, and Saturday 9-1.
