Police: Chicago Man, Wanted In Two States, Arrested in Monmouth County

Holmdel police said a resident's call led to two arrests: one man was wanted for more than 80 burglaries and another man was wanted by ICE.

A Holmdel resident called police because she became suspicious of two men walking around her neighborhood, knocking on doors, authorities said.

That phone call led to the arrest of a Chicago man wanted in two states for more than 80 burglaries, according to Holmdel police.

Police in Illinois told Holmdel officers they had been searching for Marek Danielewicz for more than a year.

Danielewicz, 36, and David Packowski, 28, whose last known addresses were in Chicago, Illinois, were arrested around 4 p.m. Friday on Sherwood Court in Holmdel by Corporal Walter Weber, Patrolman James Archinaco and Sgt. Vincent Imperato.

Around 3:45 p.m. Friday, police received a 911 call from a concerned resident who said two men were knocking on doors in the Sherwood Court neighborhood, near Route 34.

When Weber and Archinaco arrived in the neighborhood, they spotted the two men walking away from a home.

They stopped the men, who gave police fake names and identification from Canada and Poland.

But neither man could explain why they were in the neighborhood and the stories they told police contradicted each other.

Both men were arrested and taken to the Holmdel police headquarters, where they were fingerprinted.

That’s when police determined their true identities.

Police also realized Danielewicz was wanted in California and Illinois for more than 80 burglaries. Police in Oak Park, Illinois called Holmdel officers and said they had been searching for Danielewicz for more than a year. They said they would begin extradition proceedings.

Police also determined Packowski had been wanted since 2006 by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency for removal from the country.

Both men were charged in Holmdel with hindering apprehension and providing false government documents.

Danielewicz was also charged with being a fugitive from justice. He was held in lieu of $1,825,000 bail.

Packowski’s bail was set at $25,000, but he also was held on an immigration detainer that does not allow for his release.

Police determined the two men were dropped off in Holmdel by someone who was driving a light blue sport utility vehicle that may have had New York license plates. Police are searching for the vehicle and its driver. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Eric Hernando at 732-946-4400.
