Recycling is up by 93 percent in Aberdeen Township.

According to the Township’s 2017 Tonnage Report, which is sent to the New Jersey State Department of Environmental Protection, the town delivered 26,906.92 tons of recycling materials to Monmouth County’s Tinton Falls reclamation center last year, up from 13,922.54 tons in 2016.

Aberdeen Recycling Coordinator Catherine Morello attributes the increase in recycling rates to a combination of factors, including last year’s distribution of recycling bins to all township residences, as well as more businesses and construction sites reporting their tonnage to the Township.

In addition to aiding the environment, increased recycling participation benefits Aberdeen financially because recyclables are considered commodities, with the township receiving money back for each type of recyclable based on current market rates. Beyond that, as residents put more waste in their recycling bins, the town benefits from reduced fees on regular trash delivered to the county’s landfill.

To continue to increase recycling rates, Aberdeen is undertaking a number of initiatives, including working with the Matawan Aberdeen Regional School District to implement a recycling program for the 2018-2019 school year and hosting a free paper shredding event on Saturday, May 5 at Aberdeen Town Hall.

“A successful recycling program must be a community-wide effort and I’m pleased to see how all facets of the community, from residential to commercial properties, have embraced our efforts,” said Mayor Fred Tagliarini.
