UPDATE: Monmouth County Fire Destroys 8 To 12 Apartments, Police Said

A resident jumped from a second-story balcony to escape the blaze that destroyed apartments in Aberdeen Friday morning, police said.

A resident jumped from a second-story balcony to escape the blaze that destroyed more than half a dozen apartments in Aberdeen Friday morning, police said.

The fire was reported at 7:50 a.m. at Ken Gardens Apartments on Matawan Avenue, said Chief John Powers.

A significant portion of the roof collapsed and the blaze destroyed between 8 and 12 units at the complex, the chief said.

One resident suffered a minor injury and one firefighter taken to hospital with minor head injury, Powers said.

Several other firefighters treated at scene for heat-related problems.

Aberdeen police and multiple fire companies and EMS units responded to the scene. The The Aberdeen-Matawan CERT team and Monmouth County’s Office of Emergency Management, Fire Marshal, and Prosecutor’s Office also responded.

Aberdeen detectives are also investigating.
