Sign(s) of the times for Aberdeen businesses
An ordinance cleared the way for temporary promotional signage in 2011.

Sidewalk signage may become a sign of the times in Aberdeen during 2011, especially during the summer months. An ordinance approved by the Township Council at the end of 2010 cleared the way for local businesses to use temporary banners, flags, pennants, and lawn signs to promote openings, sales and special events.
The measure, which also applies to non-profits, enables the use of such promotional signage for up to 14 days.
"The Aberdeen Council is very pleased to offer these temporary signage options for our businesses and non-profits, which were drawn up by our professionals in close consultation with key members of the business community," Councilman Owen Drapkin said when the ordinance was passed. "We believe this ordinance affords businesses and non-profits new opportunities to promote themselves in a manner that will not jeopardize the safety of pedestrians or vehicles nor lead to the type of visual clutter that residents abhor."
But the new privilege comes with some administrative requirements. Businesses and non-profits must apply to the Aberdeen zoning office two to six weeks prior to the event. Applicants must also supply a plot or site plan, signage specs, a print of the proposed signage, as well as documentation of the property owner's permission.
The ordinance allows for such temporary signage as banners, flags, pennants, and lawn signs which do not interfere with traffic or public rights of way. Prohibited media include blackboard or sandwich board signs, blimps, balloons, blow-ups, moving or animated signs, live signs and skins.
Application fees are $50 for grand opening signage and $25 for special or promotional events, such as holiday or seasonal sales and anniversary celebrations. No fees will be charged to religious institutions or other non-profit organizations. Temporary signs for special or promotional events can be utilized by businesses and non-profits for consecutive two-week periods in each calendar quarter (up to eight weeks per year), with separate applications required for each event.
