Spotlight Players of Matawan Presents Original Musical The Choir Room

Community theater Spotlight Players of Matawan presents an original musical, The Choir Room, from Nov. 13-22. Call 732-583-7874 for tickets!

This fall, local community theater company Spotlight Players of Matawan, proudly presents “The Choir Room”, an original musical running November 13 - November 22. The show, written by Spotlight veterans Cliff Greene and Justin Ryan, tells the story of a small town NJ choir with big dreams.

A labor of love, “The Choir Room” is a longtime dream for the author, with a story at once both intimate and universal. The plot is guided along by an eclectic, catchy score that will have audiences giggling one scene and tearing up the next. Both the book and the score are uniquely “New Jersey,” with jokes, details, and experiences that all locals will recognize.

The show focuses on a young man, Tom, who moves to New Jersey to be with a sick relative and to start a new job in New York City. Tom, a firm believer in having a dream and working toward it, settles in central New Jersey and decides to join the local church choir. As he tries to find out the dreams and ambitions held by this “average” group through a series of songs, everyone comes to realize that maybe they didn’t know each other as well as they thought. Together they grow and bond as never before. As the seasons change, the little choir is forced to deal with an unexpected event that touches their lives in ways they couldn’t have prepared for. As they deal with this tragedy together, they are able to learn from it and go on all the while holding on to and living their dreams.
