Believe it or not orange juice is one of the main contributors to tooth decay. Sugar lingers in your mouth for approximately forty five minutes after your last sip.

“Orange juice is a double whammy!” explains Dr. Nicholas Zeik of Zeik Dental in Marlboro, NJ. Orange juice contains citric acid, which erodes your enamel. Your teeth are similar to M&M’s with a hard outer shell called enamel, and a softer layer called dentin. Orange juice also contains sugar, which is the main stimulant to bacteria creating havoc in your oral cavity, leading to cavities and periodontal disease. A few helpful hints from Dr Zeik are, drinking through a straw, rinsing with water when finished, or even better fluoride if available. Last but not least, gulp don’t sip your orange juice.
