Union Beach Man, Turnpike Worker Injured In Serious Turnpike Accident

A Union Beach man who works for the NJ Turnpike Authority was seriously injured when a tractor-trailer hit him Wednesday.

EDISON, NJ — A Union Beach man who works for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority was seriously injured when a tractor-trailer went off the Turnpike and struck him Wednesday morning in Edison.

This is according to New Jersey State Police.

William Martisch, 55, of Union Beach, works as a maintenance worker for the Turnpike Authority. He was on the job Wednesday morning when he was hit by a truck that veered off the Turnpike southbound.

At 8:47 a.m. Wednesday, a tractor-trailer hauling a shipping container was traveling in the southbound lanes at milepost 87.9 in Edison.

During that time, Martisch was conducting operations in the median between the outer and inner roadway at that location, police said. The tractor-trailer went off the road to the left, hit the guide rail, then struck Martisch and overturned, authorities said.

The left lane of the New Jersey Turnpike outer roadway was closed for approximately six hours after the accident. It was reopened at 2:45 p.m. authorities said.
