What’s up with that soda fizz?

“Soda is a double whammy!” explains Dr. Nicholas Zeik of Zeik Dental in Marlboro NJ. Soda contains acid, which erodes your enamel. Your teeth are similar to M&M’s with a hard outer shell called enamel, and a softer layer called dentin. Soda also contains sugar, which is the main stimulant to bacteria creating havoc in your oral cavity, leading to cavities and periodontal disease. Don’t be fooled by artificial sugars, because the bacterium doesn’t know the difference. A few helpful hints from Dr. Zeik are, drinking through a straw, rinsing with water when finished, or even better fluoride if available. Last but not least, gulp, don’t sip your soda.
