Adventure 'Around the World' Comes to Chester's Bragg School

Fifth-graders spend a full day learning about life in other countries, cultures with help of community.

Fifth-graders at Bragg School in Chester took a tour around the world recently, and never needed to leave their campus.

Students spent a day learning about other cultures and how their pre-adolescent counterparts lived in foreign countries through the teachings of community members who grew up or lived abroad before moving to Chester.

The day began with a presentation on India for the entire grade, leading to students to move through four presentations throughout the day. Each class visited a different country.

Parents in the community donated their time to the full-day excursion, as the volunteers gave presentations on the countries they grew up in, including Portugal, Switzerland, Ireland, France, Germany, Australia, Italy, Israel, Jordan, and Namibia.

“The idea is to let students know more about different cultures and the life of a fifth grader in those other countries,” said Millicent Roskie, one of the fifth grade teachers who organized the event.

The New York Chinese Cultural Center was on hand with a series of performances, including the “lion dance” and gave students the opportunity to come on stage and take part in a baton and ribbon dance.

Of course there was plenty of dancing, including a Salsa session representing Puerto Rico.

With the daylong event, students were able to give thanks for their international community members before taking off for a long weekend to give thanks with family and friends.
