Annual Mental Health Advocacy Walk Returns To Mendhams

The walk will raise awareness of mental health and substance use disorders and support local scholarships.

MENDHAM, NJ — The Mendhams Stigma Free Task Force will hold its fifth annual “Stomp Out the Stigma Walk” on Sunday, May 3, during Mental Health Awareness Month. The event is aimed at raising awareness and encouraging open dialogue about mental health and substance use disorders.

Check-in is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the walk starting at 1:30 p.m. after a welcome and intention-setting. Registration and the walk start will take place at Grace Lutheran Church, 65 E. Main Street in Mendham, and the route will travel along Main Street to Mountain Avenue before ending at the Garabrant Center.

The task force said proceeds from the 2026 walk will fund scholarships for qualifying West Morris Mendham High School seniors pursuing studies in mental health and or substance use disorders. Additional funds will support senior activities and provide grants to local schools and organizations for programs focused on strengthening community mental health.

“As a proud member of the Morris County Stigma-Free Communities Initiative, the Mendhams Stigma Free Task Force is thrilled to host our annual Stomp Out the Stigma Walk,” said Amalia Duarte, Mendham Township Committeewoman and chair of the task force. “The Mendhams are dedicated to raising awareness and promoting open conversations by creating an environment where individuals are supported in their efforts to achieve wellness and recovery.”

Walk Chair Liz Carrino Tamasi thanked this year’s sponsors in the announcement. “Their generosity goes far beyond this event—it allows us to truly make a difference, bringing hope, support, and vital resources to individuals and families in our community so they feel seen, supported, and never alone,” Tamasi said.

Mary Kornick, coordinator of Stigma-Free for Mendham Borough, encouraged residents to take part. “We hope community members will join us in solidarity on Walk Day and form teams,” Kornick said. “Together, we can eliminate the stigma so often attached to mental health and substance use disorders and help individuals—especially young people—access the support and treatment they deserve.”

After the walk, participants are invited to a community resource fair, free ice cream, door prizes, and children’s activities. The annual event is part of the Mendhams’ broader stigma-free efforts tied to the Morris County Stigma-Free Communities Initiative.
