Morris Co. Cops Cracking Down Over MDW: See Details

Memorial Day Weekend is one of the deadliest weekends in the country for drunk driving crashes, experts say.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Police officers from several Morris County neighborhoods have joined together to crack down on drunk driving this holiday weekend.

With Memorial Day weekend soon to be underway, authorities have announced that they will be taking extra precautions to intercept intoxicated drivers.

Morris County police departments participating include Chester, Washington Township, Mt. Olive, Roxbury, and Netcong. In addition to the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, neighboring law enforcement agencies from Hackettstown, Byram, and Stanhope will also take part in the initiative.

“Memorial Day weekend is consistently one of the most dangerous travel periods of the year,” said Mt. Olive Police Chief Michael Cordileone. “By increasing patrols and focusing enforcement on impaired driving, aggressive driving, and other hazardous behaviors, we hope to reduce crashes and save lives.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Memorial Day weekend historically averages approximately 449 traffic fatalities — a 10 percent increase compared to non-holiday weekends. Approximately 40 percent of those fatal crashes involve alcohol-impaired drivers.

In New Jersey, the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day is commonly referred to as the "100 Deadliest Days of Summer," when fatal crashes, alcohol-related incidents, and young driver crashes occur at significantly higher rates due to increased travel and recreational activity.
