MENDHAM, NJ — A building that once served as headquarters for Mendham Township's police department has begun a new chapter as a community gathering place.

Township officials celebrated the grand opening of The Annex on May 16, transforming the former police station into a multi-purpose community center that will house several local organizations while providing new public space for residents.

The building, which for decades was home to generations of police officers serving the township, now serves as the headquarters for Mendham TV, the Mendham Township Historic Preservation Committee, and the Recreation Department.

In addition to office space, the first floor has been renovated into a community venue designed to host events, workshops, meetings, and art exhibits.

During the grand opening ceremony, Mayor Sarah Neibart emphasized the importance of creating spaces that foster community connections.

"Community spaces matter — they bring people together and create opportunities for connection, conversation, and involvement," Neibart said. "In a time where so much of life can feel disconnected, spaces like this are more important than ever."

Neibart also highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project.

"Projects like this only happen when people are willing to work together and invest their time and energy into improving the community, and this truly was a collaborative effort," she said.

Township officials recognized numerous contributors who helped bring The Annex from concept to completion, including members of the Township Committee, municipal staff, volunteers, and community organizations.

The mayor offered special recognition to Recreation Director David Guida for his role in helping develop the project and create a welcoming space for residents. He also thanked the Mendham Township Department of Public Works for its work preparing and transforming the facility.

Members of The Annex Subcommittee were also acknowledged for their contributions throughout the planning process, including Township Committeewoman Amalia Duarte, Committeeman Nick Monaghan, representatives from the Mendham Arts Council, Mendham TV, the Historic Preservation Committee, local scouting organizations, the Environmental Commission, the Mendham Alliance for Conservation & Preservation, the township's Stigma-Free Task Force, and the Mendham Library.

The township is already looking ahead to future improvements at The Annex. Proposed enhancements include outdoor seating areas, native plant and rain gardens, a bicycle rack, and an informational kiosk.

Officials said additional information about supporting those projects will be released in the coming months.
