MENDHAM, NJ — Mendham Borough residents now have two new locations where they can properly retire worn or damaged American flags, thanks to a local Eagle Scout project.
Karl Maurer built flag drop boxes for the Phoenix House and the Mendham Borough Police Station in recognition of the country’s 250th anniversary.
Residents may place worn or unserviceable flags inside the boxes for respectful retirement. The American Legion will check the boxes every two weeks.
Maurer is also preparing to begin a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Army on Aug. 24.
Borough officials thanked Maurer for completing the project and wished him well as he begins his military service.
