Black River Boys Net County Soccer Championship to Top Dominant Season

Middle school soccer team wins Morris County title over Denville.

Finishing its 2014 season in championship fashion may have come as a surprise to some, but for the Black River Middle School boys soccer team, it was just the icing on a cakewalk of a season.

Taking down Denville by a score of 5-2, Black River took home the title in the Greater Morris County Middle School Group III Championship game last weekend.

Thanks to a hot start by eighth grader Irvin Hernandez, who notched his sixth hat trick of the season, Black River jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. Seventh grader James Jeffs and eighth grader Kevin Rios also scored in the title tilt.

The trophy comes after a brilliant 14-1 campaign that saw Black River net 60 goals – an average of four per contest – while only allowing eight on defense, or slightly more than a half-goal per game average.

The team is led by coach Kevin Cullen.
