Eyes to the Sky: Amateur Astronomy in New Jersey at the Mendham Township Library

On Monday, June 22^nd at 1pm, join local astronomer Kim Schoenholtz as he presents Eyes to the Sky: Amateur Astronomy in New Jersey at the Mendham Township Library.

Join local astronomer, Kim Schoenholtz, as he shares information, tips and advice on becoming an amateur astronomer.Eyes to the Sky: Amateur Astronomy in New Jersey is a beginner-friendly presentation that explores this popular subject. Participants will learn why the hobby enjoys such broad interest, as well as, highlights of New Jersey's rich astronomical heritage. This presentation guides newcomers through what's visible in the night sky with the naked eye, binoculars, and small telescopes; offers practical tips on observing in the Mendham region; and provides a basic overview of equipment, New Jersey astronomy clubs (AAI, NJAA, UACNJ), star parties, and useful apps. In addition, Kim will propose three simple steps to get started observing that very night.

About Kim Schoenholtz
As an amateur astronomer, Kim and his wife, Elvira, have volunteered for more than 25 years to show visitors the night sky through Sperry Observatory’s 24” telescope in Cranford, New Jersey. Previously, they also volunteered at the New Jersey Astronomical Association’s Observatory in Voorhees State Park. When visiting dark-sky sites, including several U.S. national parks, they typically bring along binoculars or a small telescope. When traveling in the United States and abroad, Kim and Elvira also try to visit local astronomy clubs and observatories. At home, they currently enjoy operating a very small, portable “smart telescope” to capture images of deep-sky objects.
