Entrepreneur, Army Vet of Brookside Dies at 86
Thomas Roche was a parishioner at St. Joseph's Church for more than 30 years.

He made his own way when it was needed and was sure to pay it forward whenever possible.
Thomas Roche, Jr. of Brookside died recently after battling an illness at the age of 86, according to his obituary.
Born in Orange, Roche graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair before serving in the United States Army during the Korean War at Fort Eustis, Virginia, where he climbed his way to the rank of Sergeant Major.

Roche’s professional career was turbulent at first, but grew into a tremendous success. Roche began working with American Home Foods, Inc. in Morris Plains selling instant coffee. The company went out of the instant coffee business six years later, but Roche wouldn’t let it end.
The new entrepreneur secured a loan from the First Iron Bank in Morristown, bought the business, and changed its name to American Instants, Inc.

The company just celebrated its 54th year in business.
Roche was also an avid golfer, playing frequently at Lake Mohawk and Roxiticus Golf Clubs.
Roche is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vera, three sons and many grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s School in Mendham or Oratory Prep School, 1 Beverly Road, Summit, NJ.
