In his poem, “The Wasteland,” 20th century American-born poet, playwright and critic T.S. Eliot concluded that, “April is the cruelest month.” He is not alone in his belief. Throughout history people have done an astounding number of horrible things to each other in the month of April. Carlotta Holton takes a look at the April phenomenon and discusses a few theories which offer some explanations as to why it is such a cruel month. Psychologists, astrologers and religious leaders have their own takes on the reasons April, to some, is a cursed month. And of course, there are those who just attribute the negativity to “superstition.”
