Smoke Condition at High School Contained to Roof
Burned belt on a roof unit caused the smell of smoke in the school halls Tuesday afternoon.

Despite the adage, sometimes when there is smoke, there isn't fire.
Reports of smoke in the halls of Mendham High School prompted a call to the Mendham Fire Department, officials said.
"The district Head Custodian, Glen Miller, called the Mendham Fire Department after the smell of smoke was detected in the high school in the late afternoon," said district Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast. "It was concluded that a belt on a roof unit burned out and this was the cause of the smell of smoke."

An engine from the Mendham Fire Department and Brookside Engine Co. No. 1 was on scene to assess the situation.
"The fire department investigated the entire building and declared it safe to enter and use," Pendergrast said.
