Hike For Hope To Mark Suicide Prevention Month In Mendham

MENDHAM, NJ — The Mendhams Stigma-Free Task Force is inviting residents to hit the trails this weekend for a community hike recognizing Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

The Hike for Hope will be held Sunday, beginning at noon, at Schiff Nature Preserve. The hike will be led by Chris Neif, according to organizers.

The event is part of the local Stigma-Free Task Force's efforts to raise awareness about mental health and encourage residents to seek support without fear of judgment. Click here to register.

The Mendhams Stigma-Free Task Force is a volunteer organization made up of residents from Mendham Township and Mendham Borough, including mental health professionals. It also partners with school officials, police, clergy, and outside nonprofit and professional organizations.

Township Committeewoman Amalia Duarte serves as chair of the task force, while Mary Kornick is the Mendham Borough liaison.

According to the organization, its mission is to foster a judgment-free environment surrounding mental health and substance use issues while promoting inclusion for people with special needs, disabilities and other differences that can leave people feeling marginalized.

The group notes that stigma, including fear of judgment from friends, family members and coworkers, can prevent people from seeking help for mental health and substance use concerns.

"The goal is for all residents to feel welcomed and treated equally, with respect and empathy," the task force says on its website.
