Ida G. Welsh, Longtime Mendham Resident, Dies

Welsh worked as part of the American Occupation Forces Counter Intelligence after World War II and was active in the local community.

MENDHAM, NJ — Ida G. Welsh, a long time resident of Mendham, NJ, died at home on June 5, 2017, at the age of 99 years young. Her admirable life spirit and warmth will be missed by many.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Eugene V. Welsh Jr., in 1984 and son, Eugene V. Welsh 3rd , at age seven in 1966 , she is survived by her devoted daughter, Ida M. Welsh.

Born in Linz, Austria, she met her husband in Austria following WWll while she was working as an interpreter for the American Occupation Forces Counter Intelligence (CIC). After three years of correspondence and courtship, they married in Casablanca, Morocco in December of 1948. The couple lived in Morocco while Mr. Welsh was working for Coca–Cola and in 1949 moved to and resided in Morristown, NJ. In 1963 they took up residence in Mendham.

Mrs. Welsh had an insatiable curiosity about the world and enjoyed traveling, music, art, science, entertaining and gardening. She took courses for years at Drew and Fairleigh DickinsonUniversity. She was active in the International Women’s Club and the Brookside Garden Club and had many friends at home and overseas. She pursued a career as a bilingual secretary at Sandoz for 17 years as well as enjoyed many years as a homemaker and gracious hostess, known for her hospitality and elegance.

A Memorial gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Hubert’s Animal Shelter would be appreciated. Arrangements by the Bailey Funeral Home.www.baileyfuneral.com.
