MENDHAM, NJ — Whether you're picking up burgers for the grill, making one last home improvement run or grabbing coffee before enjoying the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day is one of those holidays when hours can look a little different.

Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, in 2026. Many stores, pharmacies and restaurants are expected to remain open, while government offices, schools, libraries and other public services will be closed.

Individual locations may adjust their Labor Day hours, and some holiday schedules may not be finalized until closer to Sept. 7. It's always a good idea to check with the business directly before heading out.

Mendham and Chester Town Offices And Public Services

Municipal offices across the Mendham-Chester area will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day. Trash and recycling schedules vary by municipality:

  • Mendham Township: Municipal offices will be closed for the holiday. There will be no recycling collection Monday, Sept. 7, according to the township's 2026 recycling calendar. Regular trash collection takes place Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will not be affected by the Monday holiday.
  • Mendham Borough: Borough offices will be closed for Labor Day, and the community's annual Labor Day parade is also scheduled for Sept. 7. Residents should also expect a change to the borough's collection schedule: Monday bulk pickup will instead take place Tuesday, Sept. 8.
  • Chester Borough: Municipal offices will be closed Monday, according to the borough's 2026 calendar. Regular trash and recycling service is not scheduled for Mondays, so the holiday will not affect collection.
  • Chester Township: Township offices will also be closed for Labor Day, according to its municipal calendar. The township's regular trash and recycling schedule does not include Monday collection, so service will not be affected by the holiday.

Schools And Libraries

Public schools across Mendham and Chester will be closed for Labor Day. The Chester School District, Mendham Township School District and Mendham Borough School District calendars all list Monday, Sept. 7 as a holiday.

Libraries will be closed as well. Chester Library will be closed for the entire Labor Day weekend, while Mendham Borough Library and Mendham Township Library will be closed Monday for Labor Day and are regularly closed on Sundays. Residents hoping to make a library trip over the long weekend should plan accordingly.

Planning A Grocery Run?

Grocery stores are generally among the businesses expected to remain open on Labor Day, although some locations may use reduced hours.

Residents have grocery options on both sides of the Mendham-Chester area, including:

Both local store pages provide updated hours and phone numbers. If you’re headed to the pharmacy, keep in mind that the main store and its pharmacy counter may follow different holiday schedules.

Need Medicine Or Last-Minute Essentials?

Major pharmacies are also expected to remain available in Mendham and Chester, but pharmacy-counter hours can be shorter than the hours for the rest of the store.

Residents have convenient options in both communities for prescriptions, medicine and other essentials:

Independently owned and operated pharmacies may also choose to close or shorten their hours, so it’s best to contact them directly to verify.

Tackling A Long-Weekend Project?

Home improvement stores are typically open on Labor Day, making the holiday weekend a popular time to finish outdoor projects or prepare the house for fall.

Residents can find both a local hardware store in Chester and a major home improvement retailer just a short drive out:

Customers should check the individual store page for Labor Day hours, along with the schedules for rental counters, garden centers and other departments.

Grabbing Coffee Or A Bite To Eat?

Mendham and Chester have plenty of locally owned options for everything from a quick breakfast to a sit-down dinner over the long weekend. Because independent restaurants make up much of the area's dining scene, however, individual Labor Day schedules may vary.

For an easy start to the day, Mendham Bagel & Coffee Shop (88 E. Main St.) offers bagels, breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Those looking for dinner in Mendham can consider Dante's Ristorante (100 E. Main St.) for Italian fare, or The Black Horse Tavern & Pub (1 E. Main St.) for classic American dishes.

Holiday hours may not be posted far in advance, so anyone planning around a particular restaurant should contact the business directly closer to Labor Day to confirm.

What Else Will Be Closed?

Mendham and Chester residents can generally expect the following to be closed Monday, Sept. 7:

  • U.S. post offices: Post offices will be closed, and regular mail delivery will not take place.
  • State offices: Labor Day is listed on New Jersey’s 2026 state employee holiday schedule.
  • Most banks: Most branches will be closed, while ATMs, online banking and mobile banking should remain available.
  • Federal offices and courts: Nonessential federal government offices and federal courts will be closed.

Whether the plan involves a backyard cookout, a few errands or simply enjoying an extra day off, checking local hours before leaving can prevent an unnecessary trip. Many Mendham and Chester businesses will likely remain open, but individual locations may follow modified Labor Day schedules.
