Lifelong Chester Resident, Volunteer Dies at 87

Clara May Alpaugh was involved in a variety of organizations.

When someone asks what is the essence of Chester, there’s no need to look further than Clara Mae Alpaugh.

The lifelong Chester resident died on Sunday, March 29 at the age of 87.

Alpaugh was born April 11, 1927 in Chester, and was an active member in the community.

She belonged to the Chester American Legion Post #342 Women’s Auxiliary, Chester Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and Community Presbyterian Church.

Alpaugh was an avid New York Mets and Miami Dolphins fan, enjoyed bowling, bird watching, and camping, but most of all loved her family and friends.

She is survived by five children, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Amos Alpaugh in 2011.

A celebration of Clara’s life will be held Wednesday, April 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at William J. Leber Funeral Home at 15 Furnace Road in Chester. A funeral service will be held at the same location on Thursday, April 2 at 11 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chester American Legion Post #342, PO Box 342, Chester, NJ 07930, or the Community Presbyterian Church, 220 Main Street, PO Box 148, Chester, NJ 07930.
