Mendham Grad, Citadel Standout Receives 'Star of the West' Scholarship

James McManus will granted funds to study abroad; named Class of 2016 officer.

James McManus is making the most of his continuing education, and it’s paying off greatly.

McManus, a Mendham Borough and Mendham High School alum, is now a student at the Citadel in South Carolina, where he also serves as a member of the South Carolina Student Legislature, a student-run mock legislature. The program includes colleges and universities across the state that send delegations to two annual sessions to debate bills and further their knowledge about parliamentary procedure.

McManus isn’t just a member of the program, in 2015, he was the Governor – the highest position the mock legislature offers.

Now McManus is looking ahead, thanks to a major award from the school. He’s been named a recipient of the 2015 Star of the West International Summer Scholarship, which grants students up to $7,500 to study abroad and increase second language skills and gain exposure to opportunities in the global economy.

McManus’ accolades in April don’t end there, either. As a member of the class of 2016, McManus was also named as one of the class’s nine officers, holding the rank of Regimental Academic Officer. McManus received his official title in a private ceremony on April 9.
