Mendham Resident, Volunteer, Army Vet Dies at 95

Albert Betz was a local real estate agent and involved in many youth programs.

Albert Betz made the most of his time in the Mendhams, spending more than half a century in the area.

The longtime volunteer died at home recently at the age of 95, according to his obituary.

After graduating Morristown High School, Betz became a United States Army tank instructor of Company B – 4th Battalion at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, and served in the Pacific theater during the battles for the Philippines.

Betz then worked at Picatinny Arsenal for 30 years after the war, and became a local real estate agent after his retirement from government work.

Betz married his wife, Barbara, in 1947, and the couple lived in the Mendhams continuously thereafter.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mendham where he served as ruling elder and the clerk of session. He was also a member of the Colonial-Prospect Lodge 24 Masonic Temple for 64 years, and the American Legion Bernays Apgar Post.

Betz coached Mendham Little League teams, was a Cub Master of Pack 30 for eight years, the President of the Mendham Youth Center for many years, and Chariman of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the construction of the Mountain View School.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
